Interviews are scary? Are questions too odd?
Oxford admissions teachers.
“It is an academic discussion, most of them don’t have standard answers”
According to British media reports, an Oxford teacher in charge of the interview said that because the outside world has always made Oxford’s interview fabulous, so the school decided to put out some questions to let people understand a little bit of Oxford’s interview mechanism. “We are doing this to lift the veil of mystery shrouding the admissions interview process.”
1, the questions are in no way intended to make things difficult for candidates
“There have been a lot of rumors about Oxford’s interview questions, but our open-ended questions are not designed to catch people out; those questions are designed to stimulate discussion between students and interviewers, to see how candidates react to new ideas or whether they can come up with interesting arguments.” An admissions teacher put it this way.
Another examiner in charge of interviews for English majors also said, “We are not trying to make things difficult for the candidates, so there is no need to guess what the examiner is going to ask next, let alone prepare answers in advance. Open-ended questions are meant to provoke discussion and can have many divergent thinking directions.”
2, look at the thinking process rather than specific answers
In response to the five sample interview questions released this year, Oxford University’s teacher in charge of admissions said there were no standard answers to any of the questions, except for the math questions. “The interviewer will not examine your rote memorization of memorized knowledge, but wants the candidate to show his true ability and potential.”
“We want to see the candidate’s thought process rather than arrive at specific answers. The interview questions will start with familiar areas and then expand into broad areas beyond the textbook,” the admissions teacher said, “to see how they respond to new knowledge and ideas, how they apply their knowledge, and how they use their talents to let their intelligence shine through when they encounter new problems.” The answer to that math question is that it will form a “quarter circle with the intersection of the wall and the ground as the center of the circle”.
3, the interview takes the form of academic dialogue
“Oxford University’s entrance interviews are well organized, with specific selection criteria for each topic. Interviewers and candidates take the form of academic dialogue to select the topics they discuss.” A teacher in Oxford said that the interview is actually not that complicated, is the student and the specific professional teacher to meet, and then an “academic exchange”.
4, the interview is only part of the examination
When Oxford University announced the interview questions last year, admissions teacher Mike Nicholson said, “The undergraduate entrance interview is only one part of the process, Oxford will be through a series of measures very rigorous selection process to assess your academic ability and potential, at least two interviews.”
“I hope these example questions will be helpful in preparing candidates for the entrance interview. It will also give candidates an early insight into the atmosphere at Oxford, as such an interview process will be encountered when studying any course after admission.”
Interview questions dare to be more bizarre
Job hunting in the UK may run into these questions
The following are the top ten odd interview questions summed up by the “Women” column, the Daily Mail.
1、How many traffic lights are there in London?
2, how do you insert the fight between Batman and Superman?
3、What can you do with this piece of paper?
4、If we shrink you to the size of a pencil and put you into a blender, how do you plan to come out?
5、What color is your brain?
6、How do you think about garden elves?
7、Can you call the names of the seven dwarfs?
8、What kind of fruit would you like to be?
9、If your life were a news story, what do you think the headline would be?
10、Tell me a story?
Penny Dwarka, who works in human resource management, says these types of questions allow examiners to get a glimpse into the mindset of interviewees and examine how they respond to stress.
So how do you respond? Rachel Stockwell, who works for a headhunting firm, suggests that interviewers do some homework ahead of time to understand the various oddities in interviews; if they don’t understand a question, they can ask the examiner to elaborate; they can be nervous, but don’t overstress and avoid just answering “yes” or “no “Don’t think the worst, but have confidence in yourself.
